The Down Low on Green Smoothies

Every morning I try to drink a Glowing Green Smoothie. This drink has really rocked my world, helping me to easily eat much more fruits and vegetables than I ever have before. I definitely feel slimmer and healthier, I have more energy and it really does make you glow.

I say  I “try” to drink one every morning because there are some days when I just want cereal and a coffee, but I make myself drink a smoothie if I have one ready in the fridge.

This Glowing Green Smoothie recipe comes from Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder. Check out her book “The Beauty Detox Solution.” Love her!

To make the GGS (Glowing Green Smoothie) add 1.5 cup water with celery, romaine, kale and spinach. Sometimes I add parsley and cilantro too. Blend together really well in a Vitamix blender (the vitamix is for ballers, but it’s a great investment and something I use everyday).

Next add a pear, an apple, a banana and the juice of half a lemon, and blend well.

VIOLA, you’re done. This recipe usually makes me 2 smoothies so I drink one when I make it and put one in the fridge to have the next morning.

If you wash your greens ahead of time and put them into bags in the freezer  it makes it much quicker to make your smoothies in the morning.

You can also pre-squeeze your lemons so that all you have to do is grab a cube and throw it in the blender and you’re good to go! And you can freeze your bananas so that you always have one for a smoothie and you don’t have to worry about them going bad.

Don’t Buy Into All These Crap Products!

I was at Whole Foods today (shocker) and I saw this whole section on colon cleansing products, detoxes etc. and all these products really are so misleading and can be down right bad for you.

Imagine a very, very, dusty, dirty house that no one has walked through or disrupted in years, then imagine rustling everything up in the house, shaking all the dust up… it would be everywhere, AND it would just settle back down again unless you did something to get the dust and debris OUT of the house. The same is true with these products, they aggressively rustle up the toxins and debris in your body (which by the way will make you feel like crap, and can make you sick). If you don’t get the debris and toxins out, your body will reabsorb them! This is fact. The only way out with these products or with the toxins in your colon is through your arse!

These products, (many use psyillium husks) help to draw out and absorb all the toxins in your body, and in your colon (most toxins and disease are held in the colon). These products literally turn into a gluey sponge on your insides, absorbing all the toxins in your colon- but they do nothing to help get them OUT OF YOUR BODY.

The key to detoxing and cleansing your internal system is through either colonics or enemas. A colonic is done by a professional and an enema is done by yourself at home. (I highly reccommend enema’s at home, they are easy to do and aren’t scary at all). Also dry skin brushing, sweating, and drinking tons of water are other ways to help your body detox. Eating meat is the number one way to tax your system and put more toxins into it.

I know it can feel a little silly talking about colon cleansing, and believe me I never thought I would be the one posting about it, but really it’s important to our health and vitality, and it has changed my life completely. I have never felt or looked better. Paying attention to detoxing and colon health has completely cleared up my skin as well. Acne is a sign that your liver and whole system is full of toxins, and your body tries to expel them through the skin.

So many of us focus on the outside and on our weight, without paying attention to whats happening on the inside of our bodies. If we can talk about cleaning our cars, why can’t we talk about cleaning our bodies? If you want your whole body to function better, if you want to look younger, have more energy and glow, than colonics and detoxing are the way to go.

Healthy Ice Cream!

One of my new favorite things to have as a special treat once and a while is Laloo’s goat’s milk ice cream. (And apparently Kate Hudson loves it too.)

Here’s why I am promoting this even though I eat barley any animal products:

Goat’s milk is MUCH easier to digest than cow’s milk, so much so that even people who are lactose intolerant can have it. Goat’s milk has an alkaline reaction in the body (which is what we want, just like mother’s milk) rather than cow’s milk which is acid forming (which is bad, acid forming foods welcomes diseases etc.) Goat’s milk is also not mucus forming like cow’s milk is, and it also contains live ProBiotics. Pretty awesome! Remember just because a food is vegan does not mean it is good for you. It’s healthier for you to eat Goat’s Milk Ice cream than it is Soy ice cream. And this tastes soooo much better than any Ben and Jerry’s or regular dairy ice creams. Try it, you’ll see..

Dry Skin Brushing

One of my top favorite things to do is dry brush my skin. Every morning when I wake up I brush my neked body with a dry brush (it’s a specific brush you buy FYI.. Whole Foods has them or hopefully your near by health food store)

Your skin is the largest eliminative organ in the body and is responsible for one quarter of the body’s detoxification every day. So when you dry brush you are helping rid your body of toxins as well as cellulite and you are also strengthening your immune system.

Yummy Coconut Oil

I am obsessed with coconut oil! Try cooking with it instead of using olive oil. Coconut oil handles heat well because it is made up of medium-chain fatty acids, so it doesn’t turn into anything scary once it is cooked, like olive oil does. Olive oil raw is great, but once it is heated it turns toxic. 

Try coconut oil as a body moisturizer (it smells great!) or as chap stick!

Tea Time

I’m not a big advocate for Starbucks, BUT next time you find yourself there, try this yummy tea instead of Coffee or a crazy inducing frappuccino. This Vanilla Rooibos Tea is really tasty and is caffeine free! Much better alternative to coffee.

Detox in the Mornings

I’m drinking water with lemon, stevia and cayenne pepper this morning, before I eat any food. This helps to detox and cleanse your system and cayenne pepper speeds up your metabolism! You shouldn’t eat first thing in the morning, that is a huge myth! You should let your body tell you when it is hungry and when it is ready for food. Often times I’ll have my water with lemon in the morning and actually not be hungry until lunch! Other times I’m really hungry right when I wake up… moral of the story, don’t put food in your system in the morning until you are actually hungry! And try the water with lemon, stevia and cayenne! It’s totally tasty!

Veggie Burger Crumble

This is a yummy Alkaline Grain veggie Burger recipe I made from Kimberly Snyder’s book The Beauty Detox Solution (www.KimberlySnyder.net) (I tried to post this the other night but Tumlr was trippin and wouldn’t let me..?) Anyways here is it

The recipe has yummy sauteed spinach (I used coconut oil to saute)

and celery, carrots, millet and other yummy things in it. I accidently put too much millet into the recipe so I ended up crumbling the mixture over my salad instead of making a veggie burger patty. (Millet is a grain, like quinoa) Try it! These are delicious.

I put a salad dressing with some lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper and a little mustard.
